Presetting of bridge bearing

the purpose of presetting of bridge bearing is to reduce the cost of bearing by reducing the length of bearing upper plate. length of upper plate equal

2*irreversible movement +2*reversible movement + bearing length. 

irreversible movements such as creep and elastic shortening due to prestressing of the structure
reversible movement such as shortening or elongation due to temperature change.

in presetting we reduce the length of upper plate by irreversible movement. irreversible movement
will not change as in reversible movement. upper plate is not placed at center above bearing. it is placed in a distance of IR in the opposite direction of movement. so once the movement takes place the center of the upper plate will match bearing center.
