How will inclined bridge deck affect joint continuity?

In general, the bridge bearing is placed horizontally. The purpose of placing a bridge bearing horizontally is to prevent horizontal forces, and uneven pressure distribution resulted from the vertical load. The horizontal seating of bearing is suitable in the case of a horizontal bridge deck. In the event the bridge deck is not horizontal and inclined as shown in figure 1. the longitudinal movement of bridge superstructure in the horizontal direction will cause misalignment and jump or drop at the expansion joint location. In this case, inclined bridge bearing can be used to allow for the movement of bridge superstructure in the inclination direction. The pier should be designed to take the induced stress that arises from using inclined bearing.
